I’ve Googled ‘Birds of Prey’ to see what we’re dealing with when it comes to the 2020 plot and this is what I could find…
“Birds of prey, or raptors, include species of bird that primarily hunt and feed on vertebrates that are large relative to the hunter. Additionally, they have keen eyesight for detecting food at a distance or during flight, strong feet equipped with talons for grasping or killing prey, and powerful, curved beaks for tearing flesh.“
I mean it sounds pretty weird but Wikipedia can be off every now and then.
Oh hold on… no that’s my fault. Here’s what the film is supposedly about:
“Harley Quinn, Huntress and Black Canary battle crime kingpin Black Mask in Gotham City.“
That makes more sense but at this stage I really wouldn’t want to rule anything out. I’m keeping that ‘feeding on vertebrates’ thing on the back-burner.
If you remember chatter about a Birds of Prey film a while back, then that’s because it was announced back in 2016 before Suicide Squad hit the silver screen. Alas, Suicide Squad was f*cking awful so everyone put it out of their minds as best they could.
But hey, three years later we have a teaser. Give it a watch…
Don’t give a lot away, do they?
Maybe they learned from when they showed literally all of the film in the trailers for Suicide Squad.
Whoa watch out, everyone! Someone’s drinking straight from the bottle. This is going to be eDgY!!1!
So what can we take away from this? Well, there’s certainly a lot of characters, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary, Rosie Perez’s Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco’s Cassandra Cain (Batgirl, to some), Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask and Chris Messina’s Victor Zsasz.
Now, as you know, DC and Warner Bros are famously good at introducing a whole roster of characters at once and providing them with sufficient backstory, motivation and character development, so this should be in a walk in the park for them.
No, sorry, they’re famously bad at that. I always get those two confused. Maybe I’m being cynical but DC and Warner Bros haven’t made a genuinely good film for eleven years so I’d say I’m also being fair. With that said, I’ve not seen Aquaman and Lego Batman was fun-ish.
Cathy Yan is directing the film with is due to be released in February 2020. She was responsible for the relatively well-received Dead Pigs, which has about six main characters, so if anyone’s able to make sense from this huge cast, it’s her.
I just hope Warner Bros. don’t do their old thing of making us pay to watch a bad film, and then months later make us pay for an extended-cut Blu-Ray whilst saying “This one’s better, we promise, guys! Please buy it…”
