To infinity and beyond…

With Toy Story 4 coming out in June this year, nine years after its predecessor (I know, it’s been that long), you’d expect the last line to be recorded some time around now but it still doesn’t make it any easier to swallow that the end is in sight.

We’re supposed to believe that the upcoming film is going to be the last addition to the Toy Story franchise, but I’m pretty sure they said that about One, Two and Three too, so you’ll forgive me for not taking that at face-value.

Team that with Pixar more or less slowing down on original films, opting to throw out a whole smorgasbord of unnecessary sequels, and it seems pretty likely that this isn’t the last time we’ll hear Hanks as the toy cowboy.

Like I say though, it’s still an emotional moment, especially when you read the caption he put alongside his Instagram post reading:

Final line, final session as Woody of Toy Story 4. We rode like the wind, to infinity and beyond. Hanx

Previously, Tom Hanks – Hollywood’s dad – had described the ending of Toy Story 4 as a “moment in history”, and confessed to having a hard time getting through recording his lines.

He said on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show:

It was the first time that we were going to be recording the end of the movie, and Toy Story [4] is going to have an impactful ending.

The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually you’re facing him so he can look right up and you can talk about it.

But I didn’t want to see them and pretend they couldn’t see me. When I realised what they were going for, I realised, ‘Oh, this is a moment in history’.

It doesn’t sound like it’s going to be an easy ride for us.

Meanwhile, Bo Peep has got herself a much-needed modern makeover. Previously she served only to be Woody’s squeeze, but it looks like she’s going to be given some form of character development in this one, which is nice.

I say “modern”, if you saw someone dressed like that now, you’d assume they were dressing up as someone from… not now. Her feet are also smaller now.
