Well, that’s… something new I guess?

I mean, to start with I wouldn’t like to be an identical twin; being constantly reminded of how distinctly average-looking I am would be bad for my self-confidence, and I’d get fed up of people asking if we can tell what the other is thinking.

No, we can’t.

However, being an identical twin and sharing the same partner would definitely be a step too far.

But that doesn’t seem the case for Anna and Lucy De Cinque – the self-proclaimed ‘world’s most identical twins’ – who happen to share a boyfriend.

The 33-year old Australians, and 25 year-old Ben Byrne, have been in a relationship since 2012, and and all three of them are very happy with the setup.

“Love is love; we are all adults,” they said.

Now, though, they’re all ready to take it to the next level, and that means both having a baby with him, at the same time.

In an interview with Australia’s Today programme, the twins spoke about their plans:

“We want to experience pregnancy together. We want our bodies to look the same because we’re so close, we always want to be together and do the same,” they said.

“That’s why we share a boyfriend and so we want to experience pregnancy together, it’s such a beautiful thing for any mother to go through.

“We’re going to make that happen. If it happens, it happens so we will see. Time will tell.”

So the children would be both half-siblings and cousins? What an unusual family tree.

Having said all this, they understand that their wishes may be hard to fulfil.

“We need to be pregnant at the same time,” they said. “It’s going to be another challenge. There’s a lot of pressure on Ben.”

The sisters considered going through IVF but their mother convinced them to try and conceive naturally. They have accepted, however, that the chance of them both conceiving and having their babies at exactly the same time are very low.

“At the end of the day, that’s not really a call we can make. And that’s when nature comes in I think. You can’t control these things,” they said to one another. “But it would be amazing if we got pregnant at the same time. Even if my kid was born in the same week as yours.”

But this isn’t the only plan they have for Ben.

The twins also revealed that they both want to marry him (although it isn’t actually legal in Australia for one person to marry two different people):

“If we can change the government we would love to marry Ben,” they said in unison. “I think we should marry the same man. This is what works for us. People need to get that. We aren’t hurting us.”

And to all the people that criticise them, they had this to say:

“We know there’s a lot of people out there thinking “what the f***” but at the end of the day, it’s our bodies, it’s our life.

“You’ve just got to respect our choices. We want to have babies with the same man and we want to get married with the same man. That’s the way we want to live our life. We’re so happy that we found a guy that we love and he just cherishes us and loves us for who we are.

“This relationship is beautiful. Ben has spoken to us about kids and he’s so good with kids. We think he’ll be an amazing father.”

I honestly don’t know how he does it; having one girlfriend – with no babies – is exhausting enough for me.

The thought of two of them makes me want to jump off a very high cliff.

(Although to be fair to her I’m much more hard work than she is.)

But if they’re happy and they’re not hurting anyone or doing anything illegal, who are we to judge?

Love works in mysterious ways…
