Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have been involved in a ‘near catastrophic car chase’, his spokesperson has confirmed.
It is reported that Meghan’s mother was also in the car, and that it involved paparazzi.
The spokesperson said: “Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi.
“This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers.
“While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety.
“Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all in involved.”
The incident occurred on Tuesday night after the pair attended an awards ceremony in New York. It was their first public appearance following the King’s coronation earlier this month. At the event, Meghan won a Woman of Vision award for her work towards equality.
Fans have taken to social media to share their heartbreak at the shocking news.
“That echoes the catastrophic chase of Lady Diana RIP,” one wrote.
Another commented: “My heart was literally in my mouth dreading the next words. I was already praying ‘please God no’ to avert my worst fears. Bloody hell!”
A third said: “Oh blimey. Thoughts go to Prince Harry, who must be traumatised given that his mother Diana met a very similar fate, and also Meghan Markle too, who must have been left quite shaken by it. Thank God it didn’t go the same way as it did with Diana.”
