Viewers Outraged After Evan Peters Wins Award For Jeffrey Dahmer Role

Viewers were left outraged after Evan Peters bagged an award for his portrayal of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

The Golden Globes are meant to celebrate excellence in film and television from 2022, but this year they were subject to controversy…

Viewers bashed the Hollywood Foreign Press online after Evan Peters swiped the Best Actor award for his chilling portrayal of the cannibal killer.

Unsurprisingly, The Banshees of Inisherin won Best Picture for a Musical or Comedy, and received a whopping eight nominations throughout the night.

Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans won the final award of the night for Best Motion Picture Drama.

The winners of the TV category were HBO’s House of the Dragon, which won Best Drama Television Series, and Abbott Elementary, which won best television series, musical or comedy. The White Lotus was also very successful, winning Best Limited Series, Anthology, or TV Movie.

When it came to the best actors awards, Evan Peters was the frontrunner. He bagged the award for his chilling portrayal of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Between 1978 and 1991 Dahmer took the lives of seventeen men, and the show has previously been criticised for making money off of the tragic deaths of these innocent victims.

Despite that, during last night’s event, Nicole Byer and Ana Gasteyer appeared to make light of the tragic real-life story, and understandably, viewers were outraged.

Discussing Dahmer on stage, the pair noted that while he was “not a nice guy,” he “nailed it on eyewear… setting a trend for years to come.”

To make matters worse, Gasteyer then put on a pair of glasses, similar to that of the serial killer, before presenting the award to Peters.

But it seems that it wasn’t just Nicole Byer and Ana Gasteyer’s insensitive remarks that got people riled up, it was the fact that Peters won in the first place.

Taking to the stage to accept his award, Peters said: “Thank you to the HFPA, thank you to Netflix and Mr Ryan Murphy for letting me be a part of your brilliant vision again… and the entire post-production team for showing me how they work their brilliant magic. I want to thank this incredible cast and crew and directors.

“It was a colossal team effort. Everyone gave it their all and I would not be up here without them. I want to thank my family, friends, and loved ones who carried me to the finish line.

“And last but most importantly I want to thank everyone who watched the show it was a difficult one to make, a difficult one to watch but I sincerely hope some good came out of it.”

While the actor received critical acclaim for his role as Dahmer, viewers were less than impressed that he won, with Twitter users sharing their thoughts on his controversial win…

One wrote: “Wonder how the victim’s families are feeling about this right now. The show should’ve never been made and this just makes it worse shame on Evan [Peters] and Ryan [Murphy].”

Another commented: “This feels… just wrong. I don’t know man. Honouring the role of Dahmer feels weird. He needed to say something about the victims but he didn’t.”

“Imagine you lost a family member due to Jeffery Dahmer and find out somebody got AWARDED for dramatising his crimes,” a third added.
