The iconic actor Sergio Calderón, celebrated for his unforgettable performances in renowned films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Men In Black, has passed away at the age of 77.
The esteemed luminary breathed his last in Los Angeles on Wednesday, leaving behind a rich legacy that spanned an impressive six decades within the film industry. His family has divulged that Calderón succumbed to natural causes while under medical care.
Hailing from a modest tropical village in Mexico, Calderón’s passion for the arts blossomed when he relocated to Mexico City at the tender age of 10.
His participation in a poetry reading event ignited his love for the stage and kindled the flame that would guide him toward a remarkable career.
In 1970, he secured his inaugural acting role in The Bridge in the Jungle, an impactful Mexican production.
Calderón’s ambition eventually propelled him to Los Angeles nine years later, following the attainment of his Screen Actors Guild card for his contribution to the comedic gem, The In-Laws. Subsequently, he etched his name in Hollywood history by gracing the silver screen in over 40 distinguished motion pictures.
Among his most memorable portrayals was his captivating performance as Captain Vallenueva alongside Johnny Depp in the 2007 blockbuster, Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End.
Equally unforgettable was his portrayal of the head on a stick, held by an extraterrestrial being, in the 1997 cinematic sensation, Men in Black.
In a recent interview, conducted just days before his untimely demise, Calderón candidly confessed his adoration for villainous roles, expressing, “I derive immense pleasure from portraying these characters since they invoke such a strong disdain in people. On the streets, individuals readily approach me to articulate their loathing. Yet, to me, this signifies triumph because it signifies my ability to convincingly immerse audiences in my performances.”
Devoted fans, overcome with grief, took to the virtual realm, specifically Twitter, to pay heartfelt tribute to the late actor. One mourner mournfully expressed, “Saddened by Sergio Calderón’s passing. I had only just perused that splendid article about him in the esteemed LA Times. I shall forever remember him as El Cajon, the river pirate from The A-Team. #rip.” Another follower conveyed their sentiments, stating, “May Sergio rest in eternal peace. Calderón leaves behind a loving wife, Karen Dakin, along with his cherished children, Patrick Calderón-Dakin and Johanna Calderón-Dakin, and his adored grandchildren, Krishnaavi, Emiliano, and Victoria.
