The VMAs are one of the biggest nights of the year for music, and, as always, last night’s ceremony was full of moments that the internet just ate up.

From Doja Cat’s spooky spider web dress to Taylor Swift’s incredibly millennial reaction to *NSYNC reuniting onstage, it was certainly a night to remember.

However, one of the biggest viral moments has to be Selena Gomez’s reaction to Chris Brown’s name being called out as a nominee.

Now, we all know Selena Gomez, the star began her acting career in 2002 as a child on the PBS children’s TV series Barney & Friends.

Gomez subsequently flourished as a young Disney channel star, leading productions such as Wizards of Waverley Place and Princess Protection Program.

And since then, the actress has gone on to release music for Disney projects, including singing the theme song for Wizards of Waverly Place.

But it wasn’t long before the actress went on to make a name for herself away from children’s entertainment.

Notable roles of hers include Spring Breakers, and more recently the TV series Only Murders in the Building.

The actress-turned-singer began bagging heaps of popularity, and in 2017 she sold over 7 million albums and twenty-two million singles worldwide.

Then in 2020, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world, proving she’s unstoppable in every way.

Gomez is known for not hiding how she feels. From her public feud with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber’s new wife Hailey Bieber to clapping back at body shamers, she is one of the realest people in the music business.

And last night she proved this once again when Chris Brown’s name was read out as a nominee at MTV’s VMA show.

Brown is a controversial figure – back in 2009, his relationship with Rihanna made headlines after she ended up in hospital following an argument with Brown. He turned himself in to the LAPD, and eventually pleaded guilty to a felony and accepted a plea deal of 5 years probation, community service and domestic violence counselling. Rihanna later got a restraining order against Brown.

In the years since the incident, Brown has landed himself in further violent altercations involving stars Drake and Frank Ocean, as well as being accused of numerous incidents of assault against women.

So, when Gomez was seen making a face when Brown’s name was read out as a nominee for a VMA, the internet was all over it.

“I would’ve reacted the same way. Chris Brown shouldn’t be eligible for any awards,” one person wrote.

“She’s so real for this,” a second put.

While a third said: “She ain’t wrong. I think she expressed what we all felt when we saw that lol.”

However, others accused Gomez of being ‘disrespectful’ towards Brown, with one fan writing: “How could she do that, what’s wrong with her?”
