Gary Sinise Announces His Son Mac Has Died Aged 33

Gary Sinise, beloved actor renowned for his roles in movies like “Forrest Gump,” is mourning the loss of his son, McCanna ‘Mac’ Anthony Sinise, who passed away at the age of 33 after battling a rare cancer known as Chordoma.

McCanna, who had recently completed his album “Resurrection & Revival,” succumbed to the disease on January 5th, as disclosed by Gary Sinise on the Gary Sinise Foundation website. Gary expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “Like any family experiencing such a loss, we are heartbroken and have been managing as best we can…I am so blessed, fortunate, and proud to be his dad.”

Chordoma, a rare cancer affecting spinal tissue, was a diagnosis unfamiliar to Gary when his son was first afflicted. In a statement, Gary revealed, “In 70% of the cases the initial tumor can be removed, and it is cured. But in 30% of the cases, perhaps about 90 people per year, the cancer returns.” Despite undergoing two spinal surgeries, McCanna’s battle against Chordoma persisted, gradually incapacitating him over time.

Prior to his illness, McCanna had been actively involved in supporting veterans and first responders through the Gary Sinise Foundation, which his father founded. He also contributed as a drummer in the Lt. Dan Band, a musical endeavor led by Gary, aimed at uplifting spirits in military hospitals across the United States.

Gary reminisced about their shared moments, stating, “Those were some great times, father and son rockin’ out together for the troops.” McCanna’s dedication to the cause was evident even amidst his health struggles, as he continued his work with the foundation and even launched the Gary Sinise Foundation podcast.

Reflecting on the loss, Gary extended his sympathy to all who have experienced similar tragedies, emphasizing the resilience and spirit demonstrated by his son throughout his battle. He remarked, “An incredible inspiration to those who knew and loved him, he faced his battle with grace, courage, and love. Even with one setback after another, he never stopped living and learning, creating, and giving, and loving.”

RIP.
