Mike Tyson Offered Zoo Keeper $10,000 to Fight a Silverback Gorilla

Mike Tyson is renowned as one of the most formidable boxers in the history of the sport, but when it comes to facing off against a gorilla, opinions differ.

In the realm of boxing, asking who the greatest of all time is can yield a multitude of responses, especially considering factors like era and weight class. However, few names evoke the same level of fear and intensity as Iron Mike Tyson.

Even at the age of 57, the thought of stepping into the ring with him is enough to give anyone pause. As one commentator quipped, “Even if you paid me millions, I’d just about manage it but consider it a sacrifice that I’m offering up my well-being so my friends and family can enjoy the newfound wealth after my funeral.”

Despite Tyson’s reputation for ferocity, the idea of him taking on a silverback gorilla seems far-fetched to many. However, the former heavyweight boxing champion himself disagreed.

In the late 1980s, Tyson was at the pinnacle of his career, boasting an unbeaten record and unparalleled power. During this time, he reportedly arranged a private tour of a zoo in New York for himself and his then-wife, Robin Givens, showcasing his status as a celebrity athlete.

During the tour, Tyson encountered a gorilla in an enclosure and, in a moment of bravado, offered $10,000 to a zookeeper for the opportunity to spar with the imposing primate. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on one’s perspective, the offer was declined.

“I paid a worker at New York’s zoo to re-open it just for me and Robin,” Tyson recounted. “When we got to the gorilla cage there was one big silverback gorilla there just bullying all the other gorillas. They were so powerful but their eyes were like an innocent infant. I offered the attendant $10,000 to open the cage and let me smash that silverback’s snot box. He declined.”

This anecdote has since circulated on social media, sparking debates among fans about who would emerge victorious in such a showdown. While some jokingly suggested that the gorilla would need to beware of Tyson’s infamous ear-biting tactics, most agreed that the gorilla’s sheer strength would likely overpower the boxer.

After all, as one observer noted, silverback gorillas possess immense strength without the need for regular gym sessions or boxing training. In the end, it seems Tyson may have dodged a bullet by not getting the chance to face off against the formidable primate.
