In 1981, Michael Colborne, then-Prince Charles’s private secretary, attempted to acclimate the sacrificial lamb, Lady Diana Spencer, to the life awaiting her: “You could get a diary for three years from now and write in it the things that you are going to have to be doing – Trooping the Color, Ascot, Order of the Garter – and you’ll know where you’ll be and what date.”

A royal existence, while grand and rarified, often unfolds tediously, predictably.

Colborne’s advice remained relevant decades later as Kate Middleton, a somewhat underemployed Chelsea resident, prepared to wed Prince William. Despite her lack of royal duties at the time, Middleton could have anticipated her future engagements with remarkable accuracy.

For years, Kate has marked the early months of each year with significant endeavors in her early childhood development advocacy. These initiatives have shaped her public profile, showcasing her commitment to important causes.

In January 2020, Kate launched the Five Big Questions survey, engaging half a million Britons in a landmark examination of early childhood.

Despite challenges in early 2021, Kate pushed forward, launching the Royal Foundation for Early Childhood in June, distinguishing herself as a proactive advocate.

February 2022 saw Kate’s international outreach, with a visit to Denmark to study its pioneering approach to early childhood development.

In 2023, Kate continued her momentum, spearheading the Foundation’s Shaping Us campaign, promoting a nationwide shift in understanding early childhood.

Her efforts culminated in March 2023 with the launch of the Early Years Business Taskforce, a collaboration with prominent entities to advance early childhood initiatives.

Kate’s dedication to early childhood development has been unwavering, even amidst personal challenges. In late March 2024, she revealed her battle with cancer, a stark departure from her usual poised demeanor. The emotional toll, coupled with the responsibility of explaining her condition to her children, has undoubtedly been immense.

The momentum behind Kate’s advocacy has understandably slowed in the wake of her diagnosis. Yet, her commitment to her work remains resolute, even as she takes time for recovery.

Kate’s journey from a modest beginning in the royal family to a prominent advocate for early childhood development is a testament to her dedication. Despite recent setbacks, her professional impact is undeniable, transcending traditional royal duties.

As Kate navigates this challenging period, her supporters eagerly await her return, ready to continue supporting her important work.
