MAFS Richard ‘lost money’ being on show and calls for higher pay for cast

MAFS Australia’s Richard recently delved into the financial and career implications of his appearance on the popular reality TV series, marking his first interview since the season concluded.

Richard tied the knot with Andrea during his stint on season 11, and despite a promising start, their relationship ultimately soured, leading to their departure from the show. The 62-year-old groom, setting a record as the oldest contestant on Married At First Sight, shed light on his current relationship status with Andie, addressed the backlash he faced during filming, and discussed his absence from the reunion episode.

Speaking candidly on Yahoo Australia’s podcast Behind The Edit, Richard disclosed the financial setbacks he encountered during his MAFS journey, stating, “I lost a lot of money being on MAFS, as we all did.” Expressing dissatisfaction with the compensation received during filming, he criticised the meager payment of $150 a day, considering the substantial profits the show generates for Channel Nine.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the show, Richard highlighted the six-month period post-filming where he struggled to secure work. Despite his career as a motivational speaker, he lamented that his MAFS exposure didn’t translate into increased opportunities, stating that although more people visited his website, the uptick didn’t yield significant results.

Richard’s remarks echo sentiments expressed by other MAFS cast members regarding their financial struggles post-show. Earlier this year, an unnamed participant revealed to The Daily Telegraph the financial strain they endured, emphasising the inability to cover rent expenses and the additional costs incurred due to late-night filming and wardrobe requirements.

The revelations from Richard and other cast members shed light on the challenges faced by reality TV contestants, underscoring the need for fair compensation and support beyond the show’s airing.
