Taylor Swift Faces Backlash Over Lyric Fans Say ‘Can’t Be Real’

Taylor Swift has left fans in disbelief with a particular lyric from her latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Amidst the excitement of Swifties anticipating a new Taylor Swift album on April 19, the singer surprised everyone in the wee hours by revealing that her record was a double album, boasting a total of 31 songs.

Among the tracks are the single “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone, a collaboration with Florence & The Machine, and even a song speculated to reference Kim Kardashian.

However, amidst fans eagerly digesting each track from “The Tortured Poets Department,” it’s not one of those aforementioned that’s stirring conversation.

The lyric that has captured people’s attention hails from Swift’s track “I Hate It Here,” the 23rd song on the album.

In this song, Swift muses about retreating to ‘secret gardens’ in her mind, stating: “I read about it in a book when I was a precocious child / No mid-sized city hopes and small-town fears / I’m there most of the year ’cause I hate it here.”

At one juncture, Swift reminisces about a childhood game where friends would choose a decade they wished to live in instead of the present.

Swift’s pick is revealed: “I’d say the 1830s but without all the racists / And getting married off for the highest bid / Everyone would look down ’cause it wasn’t fun now / Seems like it was never even fun back then / Nostalgia is a mind’s trick / If I’d been there, I’d hate it.”

It’s the line ‘I’d say the 1830s but without all the racists’ that has ignited discussion online, with one listener expressing disbelief: “There are so many wrong things about this.”

“IS THIS REAL ??” questioned another bewildered individual, while a third remarked: “This can’t actually be real?”

Indeed, the lyric is authentic, prompting some listeners to embark on full-fledged analyses of their thoughts.

In a Reddit thread dedicated to the song, one user pondered: “Why would she pick the decade lol??? Like all the bigotry aside, there wasn’t even proper plumbing back then, medical care was primitive and little to no proper infrastructure. Like girl why do you wanna live in such terrible conditions lol?????”

While the song has left some scratching their heads, others have hailed it as their ‘favorite song’ from the entire album
