The Shining Star Shelley Duvall’s Life Now Is Utterly Heartbreaking

Shelley Duvall, best known for her role as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s iconic horror film The Shining, has granted a rare interview this week to discuss her upcoming film The Forest Hills, marking her return to the big screen after 22 years.

In her conversation with The New York Times, the 74-year-old actress revealed that she stepped away from show business in 2002 due to the emotional toll she endured from people in Hollywood. “I was a star; I had leading roles,” she shared. “People think it’s just aging, but it’s not. It’s violence.”

Although Duvall did not delve into specifics about the nature of the violence she experienced, she highlighted the betrayal she felt when people suddenly turned on her. “You would never believe it unless it happens to you. That’s why you get hurt, because you can’t really believe it’s true,” she expressed.

During the interview, Duvall was photographed in her white SUV in Austin, Texas, where she often sleeps due to her living situation. The writer noted the cramped conditions of her car, filled with used takeout containers, and observed Duvall’s habit of keeping photographs from her old films in her glove box.

Duvall’s partner of 30 years, Dan Gilroy, shared his concerns for her well-being, particularly when she sleeps in her car. He reflected on their decision to move to Texas following the destruction of their Los Angeles home in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, hoping for a fresh start. However, Gilroy acknowledged that Duvall’s mental health began to decline, leading to paranoia and delusions, including instances where she believed she was being attacked and sought help from the FBI.

Despite her struggles, Duvall remains a celebrated actress with a storied career that includes notable films like Annie Hall, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, and Popeye. Her return to the screen in The Forest Hills, set to release later this year, marks a significant moment for fans eagerly anticipating her comeback.
