Tampons, a staple in feminine hygiene, are designed for comfort and convenience, enabling women to continue their everyday activities during menstruation without disruption. The guidance is typically straightforward: change your tampon every four to six hours, depending on the flow, to mitigate health risks. However, for Wasser, adhering to these instructions led to unforeseen and life-altering consequences.

The onset of her ordeal began with flu-like symptoms that rapidly intensified. Concerned friends advised a resting period, but her condition deteriorated so quickly that within hours, her life was in peril. A welfare check by police initially determined her situation as non-critical, but she was later found in her apartment, critically ill and moments from death.
Rushed to the hospital, Wasser faced a dire prognosis. She endured two heart attacks, kidney failure, and severe tissue damage that ultimately necessitated the amputation of her limbs—first her right leg below the knee, followed by parts of her left foot, and eventually her entire left leg in 2018 due to persistent, excruciating pain.
Medical professionals diagnosed her with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a life-threatening condition resulting from bacterial infections that can rapidly progress, leading to severe organ damage or death. TSS is particularly associated with tampon use, though it can also occur with menstrual cups or from other infections. It is rare, affecting about one in 100,000 menstruating individuals in the U.S. annually, but its impact can be devastating.
Today, Wasser, now known as the “girl with the golden legs,” has channeled her traumatic experience into advocacy and modeling. She has graced the runway for prestigious brands like Louis Vuitton and featured in top fashion publications, using her platform to raise awareness about the risks of TSS. Her story is a powerful reminder of the fragility of health and the importance of awareness.
