A long standing rumor about Aquaman stars Jason Momoa and Amber Heard has been confirmed.

Amber Heard and Jason Momoa co-star in the DC Extended Universe’s “Aquaman” franchise, which has become a major highlight in both their careers. Directed by James Wan, the first film, released in 2018, was a significant success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide. The movie showcases Heard as Mera, a warrior princess and Aquaman’s ally, and Momoa as the titular character, Arthur Curry, who embarks on a journey to reclaim his rightful place as the king of Atlantis.

Amber Heard’s portrayal of Mera is marked by her strong, independent character who wields hydrokinesis and is an adept fighter. Mera’s complex relationship with Arthur Curry is central to the film’s plot, adding depth to the underwater epic. Despite facing personal and legal challenges off-screen, Heard’s performance has been widely praised for its strength and charisma, making Mera a beloved character among fans of the franchise.

Jason Momoa’s role as Aquaman has been equally transformative. Known for his rugged charm and powerful screen presence, Momoa brought a unique take to the superhero. His portrayal diverges from the traditional depiction of Aquaman, presenting a more rugged and relatable hero. This reimagining of the character has resonated with audiences, helping to reinvigorate interest in the often underrated superhero.

The chemistry between Heard and Momoa is another highlight, bringing a dynamic and engaging partnership to the screen. Their characters’ journey, from reluctant allies to trusted partners, adds a compelling narrative to the action-packed sequences and visually stunning underwater world.

The decision to recast Heard in the sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, all came down to her on-screen relationship with Momoa, says a Hollywood film exec.

The movie, which was released December 2023, seen Momoa, 44, as the underwater superhero and Heard, 38, in her fourth film playing Mera.

However, in the lead up to the release date, there were claims that the production studio wanted to ‘drop the actress’ entirely following her legal issues with ex-husband, Johnny Depp.

The actress said;

“I fought hard to stay in the movie. They didn’t want to include me in the film. I was given a script and then given new versions of the script that had taken away scenes that had action in it.

“That depicted my character and another character, without giving any spoilers away, two characters fighting with one another.”

“They basically took a bunch out of my role,” she added. “They just removed a bunch.”

Former president of DC Studios, Walter Hamada, denied that her role was knowingly cut due to her personal life and blamed the cut on her lack of chemistry with co-star, Jason Momoa.

“They didn’t really have a lot of chemistry together,” Hamada said. “The reality is, it’s not uncommon in movies for two leads to not have chemistry.”
