Netflix has declared that the Karate Kid spinoff, Cobra Kai is drawing to a close with its sixth season, signalling the end of the hit show on the streaming platform.

Set thirty-four years after The Karate Kid movie, the popular series made its debut in May 2018 on YouTube Premium. After Season 2’s successful release, Netflix secured the streaming rights to extend the series for Season 3 with a winning bid for the show.

Viewers saw William Zabka and Ralph Macchio team up again for the acclaimed series which follows their journey as adults who are now running their own dojos, Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do Karate.

This nostalgic series brings back the 80s rivalry between Zabka’s character Johnny Lawrence and Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso in an exciting new way. As both characters attempt to teach their own style of karate, they must grapple with the conflicts of the past while forging a new future.

Fans were instantly captivated by this thrilling story of friendship, rivalry, and redemption. However, it seems the fan base wasn’t large enough to stop Netflix from canceling the show.

Netflix recently announced on Twitter that the final season of Cobra Kai is “coming soon”, with hints that it will be even bigger and more exciting than ever before. There was no exact date provided, but fans were both excited to hear another season was on the way, while also understandably devastated that it’ll be a conclusion to this epic saga.

Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, the creators of Cobra Kai were filled with mixed emotions when announcing its end. They showed their gratitude for all the followers who showed their support throughout the show’s run, calling the news “bittersweet.”

They wrote: “Reacquainting the world with the Karate Kid universe has been our humble honor,” adding: “Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast members. It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never once taken this opportunity for granted.”

They continued, “Our day one goal with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always imagined. So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming season six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai.”

The fifth season of the show hit screens back in September 2022, and Hurwitz previously revealed they planned on continuing the show way past  Season 5.

“We are definitely writing towards an endgame, which will hopefully be beyond Season 5,” he said at the time.

While the series will end beyond Season 5, sadly, it won’t go on any further, and fans have shared their thoughts on the news…

One questioned the decision, writing: “was it the Cobra Kai team’s choice to end at season 6? bc of the creative story premise, talent & likability of its young & older cast, the show is in a rare position that allows for many more seasons w/o becoming stale… I’m sure it was Netflix’s decision tbh.”

While another commented: “One of few Netflix series that’s about to get proper completion especially nowadays when Netflix canceling shows right and left.

“I’m so disappointed about this. One of the best shows around and it’s too soon to end #CobraKai,” a third wrote.
