Jason Sudeikis has spoken about the Olivia Wilde breakup, saying the end of their relationship was caused by “a million little things” rather than one simple failure or villain. Convenient for nobody trying to compress a decade-long relationship into a headline, but probably closer to reality.

Sudeikis and Wilde separated in 2020 after nearly 10 years together. During an appearance on Sam Fragoso’s Talk Easy podcast, the Ted Lasso star discussed both the split and the way it was presented publicly.

“Oh, gosh. I mean, a million little things,” Sudeikis said when asked what went wrong. He added that going through the experience gave him greater empathy for other people facing public scrutiny.

The 51-year-old said he “wouldn’t wish it on anyone” and questioned whether that kind of coverage achieves anything useful.

Sudeikis rejects the simple right-and-wrong version

Sudeikis argued that private disputes are often reduced to stories with a clearly assigned winner and loser, even when the reality is considerably less tidy.

“To be clear, this isn’t like, all evil is just misunderstood or something like that,” he said. “I just mean these interpersonal situations that then get portrayed as being these binary situations of right and wrong. It’s always more complicated, more human than that.”

He also praised Wilde’s career since their separation. The 42-year-old actor and filmmaker has continued acting while producing and directing films.

“Olivia loves what she does and is very, very good at it and always has been,” Sudeikis said. “I’m thrilled for her.”

The former couple became engaged during their relationship but never married. They share two children.

Wilde previously discussed the CinemaCon incident

Wilde has also spoken publicly about a particularly difficult moment following the separation. In April 2022, she was handed child custody papers while appearing on stage at CinemaCon, where she was presenting her film Don’t Worry Darling.

Speaking later to Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Wilde described the incident as “incredibly traumatising.”

“I was like, ‘Just finish your speech,’” she recalled. “Got through it, went backstage, completely dissolved into a puddle.”

Wilde said Sudeikis told her he had not known his representatives would serve the documents during her presentation. “I need to believe that in order to continue,” she added.

After separating from Sudeikis, Wilde began a relationship with Harry Styles in 2021. The pair had worked together on Don’t Worry Darling, which Wilde directed. Their relationship prompted intense coverage, including claims that she had moved on too quickly.

Wilde disputed that public version of events, saying outsiders did not understand the circumstances of the original separation.

“There was never any public understanding, of course, because they’re not a part of our private lives, but of that breakup,” she said. “The public, once they assign this identity to you, then they just confirm it. Everything’s confirmation bias.”
