John Goodman has spent years changing his body. Getting used to seeing the results, however, is proving to be a much longer process.
The 74-year-old actor, who has lost approximately 200 pounds (91 kilograms) over the course of his health transformation, admitted that his reflection still occasionally surprises him during the November 2 episode of Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast.
"I'm still trying to get used to my face," Goodman said, explaining that the person he sees in the mirror does not always match the image he has carried of himself for decades.
Although he described the adjustment as strange, Goodman also acknowledged enjoying the process of becoming familiar with his changed appearance.
His comments emerged during a wider conversation about his acting career, including his work on HBO's The Righteous Gemstones. Goodman recalled feeling uncomfortable about a scene he initially believed would require him to appear naked because of how his body looked after losing so much weight. The production ultimately found a way to complete the scene.
Asked whether his former weight had restricted his acting opportunities, Goodman acknowledged that it probably had. But he also questioned whether his own behaviour and insecurities had sometimes contributed to missed opportunities.
John Goodman's 200-pound weight loss began years ago
Goodman's transformation is not a new development in 2026. By June 2023, the Roseanne and The Big Lebowski star had already lost around 200 pounds, attracting attention when he appeared at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival.
The change followed years of fluctuating weight and repeated attempts to adopt healthier habits. Goodman has described previously losing 60 to 80 pounds over relatively short periods before regaining the weight.
His decision to stop drinking in 2007 marked an important turning point, although sobriety did not immediately resolve his relationship with food.
In a revealing October 18, 2026 interview with The New Yorker, Goodman described using food for comfort after giving up alcohol, eventually approaching 400 pounds at his heaviest.
Earlier accounts of his lifestyle changes highlighted portion control, changes to his diet, walking his dogs and boxing-based exercise. In a June 2023 report, his substantial weight loss was already well documented.
What Goodman has revealed about surgery and its effects
One significant detail emerged in Goodman's October interview with The New Yorker: he disclosed that he had undergone an operation on his stomach.
He did not identify the precise procedure or establish when it took place. Consequently, the available interview does not support identifying a particular type of weight-loss surgery.
Goodman also revealed that he had developed anaemia and experienced persistent sensitivity to cold, which he discussed alongside the loss of fat beneath his skin. He did not provide a detailed medical explanation establishing how those conditions were connected.
These disclosures complicate the familiar celebrity weight-loss narrative. Goodman's experience has involved more than a dramatic change in appearance, and his public comments do not present the transformation as an effortless or universally applicable formula.
How John Goodman is approaching fitness at 74
Goodman's priorities have also changed as he has grown older.
Following a hip fracture sustained during production of Digger, the Alejandro G. Iñárritu film starring Tom Cruise, the actor has been concentrating on strength, balance and core exercises.
In his New Yorker interview, Goodman explained that this training was intended partly to help him avoid another fall. He also described continuing to work with a trainer while recovering from the injury.
That represents a different emphasis from the boxing workouts he discussed in previous years, when he described practising footwork, hitting bags and working with mitts rather than sparring.
Now promoting Digger, Goodman has been unusually candid about both his physical changes and the insecurities that remain. His latest interview is not an announcement of another dramatic weight-loss milestone, but a reflection on what it means to live with a transformation that began long before the public stopped noticing it.
