Johnny Depp has opened up about enjoying the quiet life in a surprise interview with Somerset Life magazine.

According to the actor, who lives in Somerset on an 850-acre estate with a 19th-century home, he loves a calm existence, which might come as a shock to some.

He spent £13 million for an 850-acre home in the West Country that has 12 bedrooms, 8 baths, and a Downton Abbey feel in 2014.

The magnificent home also includes expansive walled gardens and a shooting range. It appears to have been plucked right out of an Austen novel.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor was recently engaged to his now-divorced ex-wife Amber Heard at the time of his purchase. They had just tied the knot in 2015.

As fans will be aware, Depp was involved in a heated defamation lawsuit last year, after which the jury concluded that Amber had slandered her ex-husband in an essay in which she claimed to have been the victim of domestic violence.

Depp received a $15 million damage award. The actress was granted $2 million in compensatory damages after she prevailed in one of the three counterclaims she filed against Johnny.

Johnny told the magazine: “I just love places with character. British people are cool and will greet you as if you are a neighbour — without going over the top. I like going to places, seeing things and meeting people — but I’m not the great extrovert that people think.”

He added: “In truth, I’m quite a shy person. That’s one of the great things about Britain, and especially Somerset. I can just be me — and that’s nice.

“I can go into shops without being surrounded by people wanting selfies. I don’t mind that up to a point, but sometimes it gets a little too crowded.”

After reading what he had to say, fans took to social media to share their thoughts on his comments, with one writing: “I never once thought he was an extrovert. He’s just somebody that does his job and is on the red carpet and talk shows because he’s contractually obligated to do so. People that have these huge smiles and loud boisterous voices are extroverts. He like barely has a pulse.”

While another added: “I think Johnny is much more like an Englishman than he probably realises. He is quietly spoken, reserved, polite, kind, thoughtful and generous. Life in Somerset would, I have no doubt, suit him better.”

Another commented on the star living in the UK, writing: “He’s just a typical bloke. If he’s local there, he won’t be hassled, nor will he get disturbed as we have a few stars living in the UK now and they know we really don’t care about their status as its their ego’s soon get sorted out by the British lol.”

A fourth gushed: “Never thought he was always seemed shy in real life just an extrovert in film. Very kind-hearted and not starry at all. Love him to bits.”

What do you think, did his comments come as a shock?
