Grimes Changes Her and Elon Musk’s Daughter’s Name From Exa Dark Sideræl to a Symbol

Grimes has made a significant adjustment to her daughter’s name with Elon Musk, transforming it into a symbol, although she revealed that the government has yet to officially recognize the change.

The musician disclosed that her 15-month-old daughter, formerly known as Exa Dark Sideræl, now goes by the shortened moniker “Y,” or alternatively, “Why?” or simply “?”. However, Grimes noted on Twitter that governmental recognition of this alteration remains elusive.

“She’s Y now, or ‘Why?’ or just ‘?’. (But the government won’t recognize that). Curiosity, the eternal question, and such,” Grimes shared on Twitter.

The announcement came after Grimes shared a rare snapshot of her daughter, clad in a red onesie with vibrant green hair, alongside a matching image of herself.

Explaining her decision to share the photo, Grimes revealed that she and Musk typically refrain from posting images of their daughter to safeguard her privacy. However, she felt compelled to share this particular picture as the child appeared “fairly unrecognizable.”

The couple’s daughter was welcomed via surrogate in December 2021, a detail that Grimes inadvertently disclosed during a Vanity Fair profile when the writer heard the baby’s cries in the background.

Grimes and Musk’s relationship has been marked by ups and downs. Reports of their split surfaced in September 2021, with Grimes confirming in March 2022 that the couple had parted ways once again.

The duo has courted controversy over their children’s names before. Their first son, born in 2020, was originally named X Æ A-12, a choice that later underwent modification to X Æ A-Xii. However, California law prohibits the inclusion of numbers in legal names, so the child is commonly referred to by the nickname X.
