The Simpsons Just Killed Off Beloved Character After 34 Years

There’s an empty barstool at Moe’s Tavern.

Fox’s iconic animated series, “The Simpsons,” bid farewell to one of its longstanding characters on Sunday night — Larry the Barfly.

Larry, who often occupied a seat next to his buddy Sam, was a fictional 42 years old.

Although he might not be immediately recognizable to casual viewers, Larry has been a fixture at Moe’s since at least Season 1’s “Homer’s Odyssey,” which aired in January 1990 — over 34 years ago.

Making sporadic appearances over the years, Larry rarely uttered a word. However, in the Season 2 episode “Bart Gets Hit by a Car,” the inebriated character caught Marge Simpson’s attention with a memorable line: “Who’s the chick?”

In the Season 35 episode “Cremains of the Day,” which aired Sunday night, Larry passed away, prompting Homer, Moe, and other regulars like Lenny and Carl to embark on a road trip to scatter his ashes.

Given Larry’s background role and the scant information known about him besides his love for alcohol and unintelligible muttering, the script acknowledges the ambiguity surrounding his character.

Homer and his friends, realizing their limited knowledge of Larry, feel remorseful when Larry’s mother reveals that he considered the Moe’s regulars his “best friends” and asked them to share some “fond memories.” In response, they concoct a fictitious fishing story.

The loss of Larry left many longtime fans stunned. “Just learned they are killing off Larry on The Simpsons tomorrow. I need a minute,” one fan shared on X before the episode aired.

Following the episode, another viewer expressed sorrow over Larry’s demise: “I can’t believe they killed off Larry Dalrymple on The Simpsons last night. #RIPLarry.”
