Jennifer Lopez shared that she can “relate” to her “very misunderstood” character in her latest film, Atlas, during its Los Angeles premiere on Monday night.
Reflecting on her role as Atlas Shepherd, “a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence,” Lopez, 54, revealed that she sees a lot of herself in the character amidst rumours of a split with husband Ben Affleck.
“We are so different because she doesn’t wear any of her emotions,” Lopez told People. “She’s so closed off and I am too much emotion sometimes.”
She continued, “But at the same time, we are both very strong and sure of what we feel.”
“At times, she was very sure. She was like, ‘This is what’s happening, please listen to me. Please tell me.’ And felt very misunderstood at times. I can also relate to that a bit,” the Let’s Get Loud singer elaborated.
Known for her roles in romantic comedies like The Wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan, Lopez mentioned that there are moments when she’s “very sure of what” she wants, but other times she’s “very doubtful” of herself.
“I follow my instincts more than anything, and I find that when I go against that, is when I go wrong,” Lopez noted.
Lopez also acknowledged that she infused “a little bit” of herself into the role.
Amidst the premiere, Lopez’s husband, Ben Affleck, was absent, fuelling divorce rumours as reports suggest they are living separately.
A report from Page Six on Monday claimed that Affleck has “come to his senses” regarding his marriage to Lopez.
The source described the marriage as a “fever dream,” suggesting that Affleck was so enamoured with Lopez that he wasn’t thinking clearly.
It was also reported that he now “knows” he needs to divorce her, though another report from People indicated that they will try to work things out. According to People, they do not see eye to eye on how they’re perceived in public, though the source believes they’ll stay together because they have “a great love story.”
“They just have very different approaches when it comes to media attention,” a source said. “Ben hates all attention and it makes him very uncomfortable. Jennifer has always had a different approach.”
The source added that it is just not “his way” to share so much of his personal life. “It doesn’t make him happy and causes stress in his life and then in hers. There is no question their different styles clash,” the source added.
Fans began to speculate that something might be wrong with the couple earlier this month when they hadn’t been photographed together in almost two months.
However, their busy careers could explain their absence from public view: Affleck has been filming The Accountant 2 in Los Angeles while Lopez has been co-chairing the Met Gala in New York City.
Rumours of trouble in their relationship made headlines, but they were soon dispelled when Lopez was seen smiling at Affleck during his middle child Fin’s school play performance last week.
