Tales From ’85’ revisits the same story with the same characters in a new format

Stranger Things is expanding again.

But the new spin-off is taking a very different approach.

Tales From ’85, Netflix’s first animated series in the franchise, rewinds the clock and drops viewers back into Hawkins during the gap between seasons two and three.

And on paper, it sounds fresh.

In reality, it feels very familiar.

The show follows the same core group, with Mike, Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, Max and Will once again teaming up to face a threat from the Upside Down.

Same town.Same dynamic.Same mission.

The biggest difference is how it is told.

This time, everything is animated, meaning the characters no longer age and the story can continue without the limitations of a live action cast.

Which changes things.

It allows the world of Stranger Things to keep going indefinitely, but it also raises questions about how much is actually new.

Because instead of pushing the story forward or exploring new ground, the series largely revisits what fans have already seen.

Even the character dynamics remain unchanged, leaning heavily into the familiar relationships and structure that defined the original show.

There is one new addition.

A character named Nikki brings a slightly different energy, but her role feels more like a temporary addition than a long term shift.

Which sums it up.

Tales From ’85 is less about expanding the universe and more about preserving it.

And while that might work for fans who want more of the same, it does not quite reinvent the story.
