The Stockport rape case involving a woman allegedly drugged and sexually abused by her husband for more than 20 years has produced another guilty plea. Graham Brougham, 74, admitted raping the woman after allegedly being invited into her home by her husband.

Brougham, from Northwich, is the oldest of 13 men charged with sexual offences against the victim. He pleaded guilty to raping her in September 2024.

Judge warns of a lengthy prison sentence

At Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, Brougham answered “guilty” from the dock as the woman watched from the public gallery. She held hands with a family member during the hearing.

The judge told Brougham he “should be under no illusion his sentence will be custody and a long time in custody.” There was little ambiguity in the warning.

Husband has admitted 62 offences

The woman’s husband, who is in his sixties, has already admitted 62 offences against her, including rape.

Prosecutors allege he drugged and abused his wife without her knowledge over a period spanning more than two decades. He is also accused of inviting other men into their home in the Stockport area of Greater Manchester to sexually abuse her.

The husband has provided a witness statement setting out “what he says happened.” The wider proceedings involve the other men charged with offences against the woman.
