A controversial comment Steven Tyler made about his daughter Liv Tyler has resurfaced nearly 20 years after it was published, bringing renewed attention to an interview in which the Aerosmith frontman discussed attraction, parenthood and personal boundaries.

The remarks are authentic, but their original context is important. They come from music journalist Gavin Edwards' 2006 book Is Tiny Dancer Really Elton's Little John?, and the complete exchange is available on the author's own website.

The renewed attention comes as Tyler, 78, continues to face a separate civil lawsuit involving allegations dating back to the 1970s. The singer has denied wrongdoing, and the legal proceedings remain unresolved.

What Steven Tyler actually said about Liv Tyler

In the original interview, Edwards directly asked Tyler whether he had ever experienced inappropriate attraction towards his daughter, actress Liv Tyler.

Tyler responded affirmatively before suggesting that fathers could experience a degree of physical attraction to their daughters because of the resemblance between children and their parents.

His most controversial assertion was that a father would experience sexual attraction towards his daughter on some level.

However, the full interview, published by Edwards, contains an additional distinction that is often missing when the remark circulates in isolation.

Tyler went on to argue that recognising a feeling and acting upon it were entirely different matters. He insisted that a father should never cross that boundary, and referred to Aerosmith's song Janie's Got a Gun, which addresses abuse within a family.

That qualification does not change the disturbing nature of the original assertion, but it establishes what Tyler said during the complete conversation rather than presenting one sentence without its surrounding explanation.

The exchange was published in 2006. There is no indication that it represents a new statement from Tyler or a recent interview with the musician.

Where Steven Tyler's civil lawsuit stands in 2026

The comments have resurfaced while Tyler is defending himself against a civil lawsuit brought by Julia Misley, formerly known as Julia Holcomb.

Misley filed her lawsuit in December 2022, alleging that Tyler sexually abused her during a relationship that began in 1973, when she was 16 and he was 25.

Her case raised allegations concerning encounters in several US states, including California. Tyler has disputed the allegations and denied wrongdoing.

A significant development came on 28 April 2026, when a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge issued a ruling that substantially narrowed the lawsuit.

According to the court's written decision, claims based on conduct outside California could no longer proceed in the case. However, the judge rejected Tyler's request for summary judgment disposing of the entire lawsuit.

The ruling allowed litigation concerning alleged conduct in California, including an emotional distress claim, to continue. The court concluded that disputed factual questions required determination by a jury.

Crucially, the decision was not a finding that Tyler was liable for the alleged conduct. It established which claims could continue through the legal process.

The case encountered another procedural complication in September 2026. Judge Patricia A. Young recused herself shortly before a jury trial scheduled for 28 September, forcing the trial date to be removed from the calendar.

As Rolling Stone reported, the recusal followed a potential conflict that the parties did not agree to waive. The proceedings therefore faced further delay rather than reaching a verdict.

Why the interview and lawsuit should be treated separately

Although the resurfaced interview and the civil proceedings have attracted attention at the same time, they concern different subjects and different periods in Tyler's life.

The 2006 exchange involved questions about Tyler's feelings towards his daughter. Misley's lawsuit concerns allegations arising from a relationship in the 1970s, decades before the interview was published.

The interview does not establish the truth of Misley's allegations, and the existence of the lawsuit does not independently establish anything about Tyler's relationship with Liv.

What can be established is that Tyler made the controversial remarks, that his complete answer included an explicit rejection of acting on such feelings, and that the separate California civil proceedings have not produced a final determination of liability.
